Continental was the typewriter line of Wanderer-Werke (earlier Winklhofer & Jaenicke) of Chemnitz, and the standard model first appeared in 1904 and grew into a major international machine that held its own against the American makers. These are the classic interwar German desk typewriters: cast-iron frames in black enamel, round glass-topped keys, and often an engraving of the Chemnitz factory across the front. As a standard it is a heavy, planted machine rather than anything you'd carry, but the build quality is the draw. Wanderer also made a small leather-cased Continental portable in the 1930s, with a fold-up writing surface in the lid.
