presses rather than strikes, short throw, felt actuation step, dampened

The thrust mechanism presses the slug to the paper instead of striking it: short throw, a felt actuation step, a bit of thunk, genuinely hushed, and less crisp than a Smith-Corona. The compact noiseless; see the Model 7 for the larger semi-portable.

Unlike conventional typewriters that strike the platen, the Noiseless mechanism slows and presses the typebar against the paper for a softer, dampened sound. The result is a distinctive feel — shorter throw, less crisp than a Smith-Corona Silent — that takes some adjustment but rewards quiet writing. Useful in offices where dictation was happening, beloved by certain writers, mechanically the most unusual typewriter most people will ever sit down with.
