Weddings, milestone birthdays, retirements, and reunions -- any gathering where people have something to say to each other. It’s great to give a good speech, but it’s even better for guests to put things into writing.

I bring a fleet of vintage typewriters, set them on tables, and help your guests write notes to the couple, to the retiree, to the birthday honoree, to each other. The pages get collected and bound into a keepsake.

The Typewriter Session

Your team unplugs completely and writes through a series of short, guided rounds.

No writing experience required. Most people have never touched a typewriter, and the first few keystrokes always get a laugh. Soon, the room fills with the rhythm of the keys, and people start writing things that surprise them.

Everyone keeps their pages.

How it works

We talk

A short call about your team, your offsite, and what you’re hoping for. I tailor the prompts and pacing from there.

Setup

I bring restored vintage typewriters, paper, supplies. No AV or electricity or tech support on your end. I just need tables and chairs.

The session

A brief orientation, then timed writing rounds. Early rounds are light. Later rounds go deeper, for a total of 60-90 minutes. Closes with a facilitated conversation.

They keep the pages

Your team walks away with their typed pages and, usually, a few stories they’ll be telling for a while.

About the facilitator

I started leading immersive writing experiences internationally in 2010. These were two to three week retreats in Italy, Bali, and the Caribbean. The Typewriter Session grew out of observing that the most consistent breakthroughs happened when getting people to work in new tactile and analog formats.
