I bring restored vintage typewriters to rooms where people write. The machines are beautiful. The sound is half the experience. And there's no delete key, so what comes out stays on the page.
Corporate & Teams
A hands-on creative experience for team offsites.
Your team unplugs completely and writes through a series of short, guided rounds. No writing experience required. Most people have never touched a typewriter, and the first few keystrokes always get a laugh. Soon, the room fills with the rhythm of the keys, and people start writing things that surprise them.
Everyone keeps their pages.
Before the session: A short call to learn about your team, your offsite, and what you’re hoping for. I tailor the prompts and pacing from there.
Setup: I arrive early and set up 10–16 restored vintage typewriters, paper, and supplies. No AV, no electricity, and no tech support needed on your end.
The session: A brief orientation to the machines, then a series of timed writing rounds. Early rounds are light and concrete. Later rounds go deeper. The session closes with a facilitated conversation about the experience.
After: Your team walks away with their typed pages and, usually, a few stories they’ll be telling for a while.
Duration: 60–90 minutes
Group size: 6–16 per session
Larger groups: Consecutive sessions available
Setup: Tables and chairs at your venue
Location: Austin and Central Texas
$2,500 for up to 12 participants. $175 per additional person (up to 16).
Half-day and multi-session packages available. One invoice with no additional fees.
“Stephen masterfully guided the creative process with just enough structure, just enough push to help reconnect my inner voice with its outer expression.”
Justine R., retreat participant
I started leading immersive writing experiences internationally in 2010. These were two to three week retreats in Italy, Bali, and the Caribbean. The Typewriter Session grew out of a simple observation that the most consistent breakthroughs happened when getting people to work in new tactile and analog formats.

Private Events
Weddings, milestone birthdays, retirements, and reunions. Any gathering where people have something to say to each other. It's great to give a good speech, but it's even better for guests to put things into writing.
I bring a fleet of vintage typewriters, set them on tables, and help your guests write notes to the couple, to the retiree, to the birthday honoree, to each other. The pages get collected and bound into a keepsake.
Pricing starts at $1,000. Depends on group size, duration, and format.
Public Events
I run ticketed typewriter evenings at wine bars, bookstores, and other places suited to the sound of a room full of typewriters: love letter nights, note-writing workshops, freewriting salons, and seasonal pop-ups around Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, and the holidays. I also set up typewriters for free at farmers markets, breweries, and festivals around Austin.

Retreats
From 2010 through 2016, I led multi-day writing immersion retreats in Italy, Bali, Mexico, and the Caribbean with curated groups of 12-16. Morning yoga and breathwork, silent mornings, all day to write and recharge, evenings to share and critique. No conferences, no panels. Writing Immersion retreats offer time, flexible structure, and a room full of supportive people doing the same work.
I’m planning new retreats now. The format will be similar—small groups, beautiful destination, a holistic schedule built around writing and creative practice—with typewriters as part of the experience.
Spots are likely to fill up soon once I announce them. If you’d like to be in the loop about future retreat dates and locations, leave your email below.
About the machines
Every typewriter I bring was built before 1970 and has been cleaned, tuned, and restored. They’re beautiful machines.
